Covid-19 has changed the world in ways no one would expect. Not only works, but the virus also affects our personal life. Like it or not we have to re-examine our everyday activity from grocery shopping to greetings to others. With the still high rate of new cases every day, it is best not to let your guard down for whatever purposes. It is now mandatory to always wear a mask when sick or outside, avoid crowds, and always keep your hands clean.
Importance of surface disinfectant
Even though we have followed the Movement Control Order religiously, but it is also important to keep the surrounding clean. This is because the virus may survive for hours and even days on surfaces according to the surface type. For instance, the virus can survive for more than six hours in the refrigerator, two days on cardboard, and 2-3 days on stainless steel or plastic.
Only cleaning is not enough to kill the virus on the surface. That is why you also need to disinfect the surface at homes, offices, and other places. Of course, there is a difference between cleaning and disinfect. Cleaning is simply wiping the surface off stains and dust with a damp cloth. While disinfect uses chemicals to kill most of the virus and germs on the surface. But before disinfect, it is better to clean the surface first to get rid of debris. This will make disinfect more effective and kill more viruses.
What to disinfect?
Even though disinfect is effective in killing viruses, but there are still debates on what kind of surfaces should be disinfected. While disinfect all surfaces is hard, here is some general stuff that should be disinfected regularly.
High touch surface
Higher risk to transfer the virus from one person to another. This category includes door handles, lift buttons, toilet flush, stair rails, seats in public places, and so on. The Malaysian government supports the citizens through the campaign to disinfect public transportation including bus and train seats, ticket turnstiles, hand railings, and many more. Since 20 percent of the citizen commutes using public transportation, it is important to provide clean transportation.
Aside from public transportation, other public places also require disinfectant. Offices, malls, restaurants, and so on should also follow the regular disinfectant. Disinfection is one simple way to kill viruses and germs, thus public facilities are safe to use.
Gadget
The gadget should be stuff on the list to disinfect. The high frequency of touching and holding gadgets makes it prone for the virus to stay on the surface. Not only personal phones, the computer in offices and public places should be disinfecting. Since it is an electronic device, it is better to use wet wipes containing alcohol because it evaporates quickly and does not affect the gadget’s performance. For a more sensitive gadget, alcohol wipes can be a good option as they will not soak the gadget. Disinfecting may seem simple but it is quite useful in helping kill viruses and germs.
